In October, one Chinese automaker sold more battery-electric cars in 31 days than every brand in the United States sold in three months. BYD sold 305,743 pure electric vehicles in October 2026, the first time it has topped 300,000 EVs in a single month. Kelley Blue Book estimates the entire US market sold 262,649 EVs in the third quarter.
The record came inside a bigger number. BYD's total October sales of new energy vehicles, which counts battery-electrics, plug-in hybrids and commercial vehicles, reached 490,168, up 11% from a year earlier and its best month of 2026. Here's what is behind the numbers, where the growth is coming from, and how BYD now compares with Tesla.

BYD October 2026 Sales: The Full Breakdown
BYD reported its October results in a stock exchange filing on November 1. The split between battery-electric (BEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models shows a company that is moving its customers toward fully electric cars quickly.
| Category | October 2026 | Change vs. Oct. 2025 |
| Total NEV sales | 490,168 | +11.0% |
| Passenger BEVs | 305,743 | +37.4% |
| Passenger PHEVs | 177,382 | -17.2% |
| Commercial vehicles | 7,043 | +45.2% |
| Overseas sales | 170,194 | +102.8% |
| Sales in China | 319,974 | -10.6% |
Battery-electric cars made up about 63% of BYD's passenger car sales in October. A year ago, BEVs and PHEVs were close to an even split, based on BYD's year-over-year changes. October was also BYD's third straight month of rising EV sales.
What "NEV" means
- NEV (new energy vehicle) is China's official term. It covers battery-electric cars, plug-in hybrids and fuel-cell vehicles.
- BEV means a car that runs only on its battery and has no gas engine. These are the cars that compare directly with Tesla models.
- PHEV means a plug-in hybrid. It has a battery you can charge, plus a gas engine. BYD sells these under its DM-i and DM-p names.
Did BYD Really Outsell the Entire US EV Market?
Yes, and by a wide margin. According to Cox Automotive's Kelley Blue Book estimates, Americans bought 262,649 EVs in the third quarter of 2026 (July through September). That was up 6.1% from the second quarter but down 39.5% from the third quarter of 2025, when buyers rushed to beat the end of the federal EV tax credit. EVs made up about 6.4% of US new-vehicle sales in the quarter.
BYD's 305,743 BEVs in October beat that three-month US total by more than 43,000 cars. Its total October NEV sales were nearly double it.
BYD does not sell passenger cars in the United States, and Chinese-built EVs face a 100% US tariff, so American buyers won't see these cars in showrooms. But the comparison shows how far apart the world's two largest car markets have drifted on electrification.
