Hyundai's October 2026 US sales rose 5% to 73,452, a record, and 29% were hybrids as gas stayed above $4. The IONIQ 5 gained 21% for the month and has topped 33,000 sales in 2026, though it still trails last year.

Gas above $4 a gallon is changing what Americans drive home from Hyundai dealers. In October 2026, 29% of all Hyundais sold in the US were hybrids, the highest hybrid share the brand has ever recorded. That's nearly one in every three cars.

Hyundai Motor America sold 73,452 vehicles last month, up 5% from a year ago and its best October on record. Hybrid sales rose 20% to set their own October record. Meanwhile, the all-electric IONIQ 5 posted a 21% gain for the month and has now passed 33,000 US sales in 2026, even as it trails last year's pace. Here's what Hyundai's October sales say about where buyers are going, and what it means if you're shopping for a hybrid or an EV.

Hyundai said hybrid versions of the Santa Fe and the redesigned Palisade each set October sales records. The Palisade is a big part of the story: the first-generation three-row SUV never offered a hybrid, so every Palisade Hybrid sale is new business for the brand.

Why Hybrids Are Surging: Gas Prices Above $4

The simplest explanation is at the pump. AAA's national average for regular gasoline was $4.27 on October 22 and $4.22 on October 29. Prices have eased a few cents a week lately, but they've stayed high for months.

When fuel costs climb, many buyers who aren't ready for a fully electric car split the difference. A hybrid needs no charger, no change in habits and no planning around public charging, yet it can cut fuel use sharply in city driving. Hyundai now offers hybrid versions of its best-selling SUVs and sedans, which puts it in a strong spot to catch those shoppers.

Hyundai isn't alone. Sister brand Kia reported a 114% jump in hybrid sales in October, led by the Sorento, Sportage and Carnival hybrids, on its way to a record 80,008-vehicle month.

IONIQ 5 Sales Top 33,000 in 2026

Hyundai's electric crossover is finding its footing after a rough year. The IONIQ 5 sold 1,981 units in October, up 21%, bringing its 2026 total to 33,093 through ten months. That's still down 23% from more than 42,700 at the same point in 2025.

Two things explain the drop. First, the $7,500 federal EV tax credit ended on September 30, 2025, and buyers rushed to grab it before it disappeared. That pulled sales forward into 2025 and left the whole EV market softer since. Second, October 2025 was the first month without the credit, so this year's 21% gain is measured against a weak month.

Even so, the IONIQ 5 remains one of the strongest EVs in the country. Through the third quarter, it ranked third among US EVs, behind only the Tesla Model Y and Model 3, according to Electrek. Those two Teslas together made up about half of US EV sales in that period.

What an IONIQ 5 costs now: the 2027 IONIQ 5 SE Standard Range starts at $35,250 with up to 245 miles of range. The extended-range SE RWD costs $2,500 more and is rated at up to 318 miles. Hyundai cut 2026 IONIQ 5 prices by up to nearly $10,000 on some trims right after the federal credit ended, and 2027 pricing has stayed close to that level.

The IONIQ 9 Slips

Hyundai's three-row electric SUV had a weaker month. The IONIQ 9 sold just 169 units in October, down 47%. For the year it's still up 49%, at nearly 6,700 sales, helped by the fact that it didn't reach showrooms until 2025. Large, expensive electric SUVs have been one of the hardest segments to sell without a federal credit.

Read the percentages carefully: many of October's big EV gains, at Hyundai and across the industry, are measured against October 2025, when EV sales fell sharply right after the tax credit expired. A 21% increase from a low base is real progress, but the IONIQ 5 is still selling below its 2025 pace for the year.

What It Means for Car Shoppers

  • Hybrids are in demand. With a record share of Hyundai sales, popular hybrid trims such as the Santa Fe Hybrid and Palisade Hybrid may see less discounting and tighter supply at some dealers.
  • EV deals are still out there. Lower IONIQ 5 pricing, and a market that's still rebuilding after the credit ended, give EV buyers room to negotiate.
  • Do the fuel math. At $4.22 a gallon, a driver covering 12,000 miles a year in a 25-mpg SUV spends about $2,000 on gas. A hybrid getting mid-30s mpg cuts that by several hundred dollars. An EV charged at home typically cuts it further, depending on local electricity rates.

Hyundai is also betting on the IONIQ 5 beyond retail buyers. The company is preparing to supply Waymo with tens of thousands of IONIQ 5-based robotaxis, according to InsideEVs, which could add steady volume to the model in the years ahead.

The bottom line: Hyundai's record October shows what $4 gas does to the market: buyers move toward hybrids first. Nearly one in three Hyundais sold last month was a hybrid, a brand record. The IONIQ 5 is recovering, with sales up 21% in October and more than 33,000 sold this year, but it's still 23% behind 2025. For now, the hybrid is the main way most American buyers are cutting their fuel bills.
