Tesla Registrations Surge in Northern Europe: Sweden +248%, Norway's Best October Ever, but Chinese Brands Hit a Record
Tesla's October 2026 registrations jumped 248% in Sweden, 131% in Norway and 34% in Denmark. Tesla was Norway's #1 brand, but Chinese automakers took a record 22.5% of the Norwegian market and outsold Tesla in Denmark.

For most of the past two years, Tesla's Europe headlines were grim. Registrations fell, Chinese brands moved in, and analysts asked whether the Model Y had lost its grip on the continent where EVs first went mainstream. The October numbers from Northern Europe tell a different story. Tesla registrations jumped 248% in Sweden, 131% in Norway and 34% in Denmark compared with a year ago.
There is a catch, and it is a big one. Chinese automakers are rising at the same time, and in Norway, the most electric car market on earth, they just posted their best month ever.

Norway is the headline. Tesla registered 1,548 cars there in October, took 9.8% of the market and finished as the country's top-selling brand. It was Tesla's best October in Norway on record. In a country where nearly every new car sold is electric, being #1 means beating every EV maker, not just the gas brands.
Sweden's 248% leap is the biggest number, but it needs context. October 2025 was a very weak month for Tesla in Sweden, so the comparison is easy. The trend is still clearly up.
Denmark is the warning light. Tesla grew 34%, but its market share was just 0.73%, behind BYD, Leapmotor, Xpeng and SAIC's MG. Each of those brands took between 1.6% and 5.5% of the Danish market.

The Chinese Brands Aren't Slowing Down
Here is what keeps Tesla's European comeback from being a clean win. In Norway, Chinese brands took 22.5% of all new car registrations in October, their highest monthly share ever. More than one in five new cars sold in Norway now comes from a Chinese automaker.
Analysts say Northern Europe is unusual. Buyers there are open to new brands, but they aren't simply hunting for the cheapest car. ING Research economist Rico Luman told Reuters that in Norway, "people are less seeking the lower offerings of Chinese brands than in other European countries." Car Industry Analysis's Felipe Munoz put it more bluntly: Northern Europe is "quite open to the new players as long as they are efficient EVs."
Why it matters: Tesla mainly sells two cars, the Model 3 and the Model Y. BYD, Xpeng, Leapmotor and MG offer wide line-ups at many price points, from small city cars to large SUVs. In markets where buyers want choice, Tesla's narrow line-up is its biggest weakness. In markets where buyers want the best EV, as Norway's numbers suggest, the Model Y still wins.

What's Driving Tesla's Rebound?
Easy comparisons: late 2025 was one of Tesla's weakest stretches in Europe, so year-over-year percentages look big.
Higher fuel prices are pushing more buyers toward EVs.
Government incentives across the region are lowering EV costs.
The refreshed Model Y is now fully on sale in Europe, built at Giga Berlin.
A full order book: Tesla said it ended Q3 2026 with its largest passenger-vehicle order backlog in four years.
Keep it in perspective: Sweden, Norway and Denmark are small markets. Norway's record month was about 1,500 cars. Europe's biggest markets, the UK and Germany, report their October data later this week. Strong Nordic results are a good sign, not proof of a full European turnaround.

What It Means for Tesla Fans in the US
Europe accounts for a large share of Tesla's global deliveries, and Giga Berlin's output depends on European demand. A real recovery there would help Tesla's Q4 delivery number, which Wall Street is watching closely after a strong Q3. It also shows that the Model Y can win head-to-head against the newest Chinese EVs in an open market, a market US buyers can't see directly, because Chinese brands are effectively shut out of the US by tariffs.
Tesla is #1 in the world's most electric market again. But in Norway, more than one in five new cars is now Chinese.
The bottom line: October was Tesla's best month in Northern Europe in a long time. It set a record October in Norway, sales more than tripled in Sweden, and it grew in Denmark. But the same data shows Chinese brands at an all-time high, and in Denmark Tesla is being outsold by four of them. Tesla's European comeback is real. So is the competition. Watch Germany and the UK this week for the bigger picture.
