Walmart's EV Charging Network Just Hit 100 Stores — Here's What That Actually Looks Like

Walmart opened its 100th company-owned EV fast-charging site this week, in Monument, Colorado, bringing its 400 kW network to 20 states. With over 5,200 US locations and a stated goal of thousands of chargers by 2030, Walmart is quietly positioning itself as one of the country's largest charging networks.

Walmart's EV Charging Network Just Hit 100 Stores — Here's What That Actually Looks Like

Walmart has opened its 100th company-owned EV fast-charging site, a milestone that puts its charging network across 20 states. The site that hit the mark is a Walmart Supercenter in Monument, Colorado, with eight charging plugs — four CCS1 and four NACS — capable of delivering up to 400 kW.

What's Actually at These Sites

Most Walmart charging locations have between 8 and 16 plugs, split between the CCS1 standard and Tesla's NACS connector — meaning the network works with essentially every EV on the road today, not just Tesla vehicles. Walmart is using 400 kW hardware from two European charging manufacturers: ABB E-mobility's A400 All-in-One and Alpitronic's HYC400 Hypercharger. The Monument, Colorado site uses ABB hardware.

How the hardware works
  • ABB's A400 can deliver 200 kW to each of two vehicles simultaneously, or the full 400 kW to a single vehicle
  • Alpitronic's units pair one CCS1 cable and one NACS cable per charger, serving two stalls each
  • Most EVs on the market today can't yet accept the full 400 kW, so real-world charging speeds vary by vehicle
  • In an earlier InsideEVs test at a Walmart site in McKinney, Texas, a GMC Hummer EV pulled over 300 kW and charged from 1% to 53% in 27 minutes

Built to Work Inside the Walmart App

Rather than requiring a separate charging app, Walmart built its charging software in-house through Walmart Global Tech, integrating it directly into the main Walmart app. Drivers can locate a charger, start a session, pay, and monitor progress from the same app they already use for shopping — and Walmart+ members get a discount on charging. Station data also feeds into Apple Maps, Google Maps, PlugShare, ChargeHub, and Chargeway, so the chargers are discoverable even for drivers who don't have the Walmart app installed.

"When a customer pulls into a Walmart to charge, we want the experience to feel as reliable and effortless as the rest of their shopping trip. We're proud to reach 100 sites, but our focus remains on building a network customers can count on every time they charge with us."

The Bigger Ambition

Walmart has previously said it plans to install chargers at thousands of Walmart and Sam's Club locations by 2030. With more than 5,200 US stores and roughly 90% of Americans living within 10 miles of one, the company has enough real estate to eventually become one of the largest fast-charging networks in the country — without needing to acquire new land or negotiate separate site leases the way many standalone charging companies do.

Worth keeping in perspective
  • 100 sites is still a small fraction of Walmart's total US footprint of over 5,200 stores
  • Most sites have only 8-16 plugs, which can still mean a wait during peak travel times at busier locations
  • Payment currently runs primarily through the Walmart app, though the company says more payment options are coming as the network grows

The bottom line: 100 sites in 20 states is a genuine milestone, but it's early proof of concept relative to Walmart's stated thousands-of-locations goal by 2030. What makes it notable isn't the current scale — it's that Walmart already has the real estate, foot traffic, and now the in-house software to become a major charging player without starting from scratch the way most networks have to.
