What We Know About the Fathom So Far

Ford revealed the Fathom's name and price in August (here's our full breakdown), but it still hasn't shown the finished truck. Camouflaged prototypes have been spotted testing on public roads, including the Las Vegas Strip. Here's what's confirmed:

  • Platform: The first vehicle on Ford's new Universal EV (UEV) platform, built from scratch for EVs
  • Battery: LFP cells, with the pack forming the truck's floor for a lower center of gravity and more cabin space
  • Drive: Rear-wheel drive standard, all-wheel drive optional
  • Space: More passenger room than a Toyota RAV4, plus a front trunk and a bed
  • Speed: Ford is targeting 0–60 mph about as quick as a Mustang EcoBoost
  • Tech: A large touchscreen with built-in Apple Maps, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a digital key, and app remote control
  • Charging: A built-in NACS (Tesla-style) port and bidirectional charging that can power your home or tools
  • Driver assist: Every Fathom has the hardware for BlueCruise hands-free highway driving
  • Built in: Louisville Assembly Plant, Kentucky
What Ford still hasn't announced
  • Official range. Ford has said extended-range versions target around 300 miles, but hasn't given a figure for the $28,350 base truck
  • Battery size and towing capacity
  • Final dimensions. Ford calls it "midsize," but prototypes look closer in size to the compact Maverick
  • What the truck actually looks like. The real reveal is expected with preorders in early 2027

Ford's Big Promise: Cheaper Than a Used Tesla

Ford's boldest claim is about cost of ownership. Ford says that over five years, the Fathom will cost less to own than a three-year-old used Tesla Model Y. If that holds up, it's a strong pitch for families who've been priced out of EVs, especially now that the $7,500 federal tax credit is gone.

CEO Jim Farley has been open about how hard this will be. Speaking at the 2026 Automotive News Congress, he said: "It's going to be a heck of an effort to launch this at scale, at cost, on time." A Ford spokesperson told Electrek the plan hasn't changed: "Fathom will launch in 2027 – and there is no change to that."

Why Ford Needs the Fathom

Ford's current EVs are struggling. In Q3 2026, Ford sold just 6,047 EVs in the US, down 80.2% from a year earlier. Mustang Mach-E sales fell 72%, and the discontinued F-150 Lightning sold only 289 units. Ford's EV lineup has been too expensive for most buyers without the federal tax credit.

Ford EVQ3 2026 US salesChange vs. Q3 2025
Mustang Mach-E5,574−72.4%
F-150 Lightning289−97.1% (discontinued)
E-Transit184−57.2%
Total Ford EVs6,047−80.2%

The Fathom is Ford's answer: an EV priced like a gas compact SUV instead of a luxury truck. At about $29,945 with destination, it would be one of the cheapest EVs in America. Its main sub-$30,000 pickup rival is the deliberately basic Slate truck backed by Jeff Bezos.
