The Volkswagen ID.4 is being replaced, and its successor uses the most valuable name in VW's lineup. Volkswagen has revealed the all-new ID. Tiguan, an electric compact SUV that replaces both the ID.4 and ID.5 in Europe in early 2027. It offers up to 600 km (about 373 miles) of WLTP range, faster charging, physical buttons again, and a starting price of €42,695 in Germany. VW says it plans for the ID. Tiguan to succeed the ID.4 in North America too, but US timing and pricing haven't been announced yet.

Why VW Put the Tiguan Name on an EV

The Tiguan is Volkswagen's best-selling model worldwide, and the ID.4 has been its best-known EV. Combining the two is a clear bet: shoppers who would never look at something called "ID.4" already know and trust the Tiguan name. VW is doing the same thing across its lineup by giving its EVs familiar names, the way the ID. Polo is following the Polo.

"The Tiguan is our best-selling model worldwide, and the ID.4 and ID.5 are among our most successful electric cars."

The ID.4 and ID.5 together have passed 950,000 units built, so the ID. Tiguan has a lot to live up to.

Specs: Three Versions, Two Batteries

The base model uses a 58 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, a cheaper and longer-lasting chemistry that's also used in standard-range Teslas. The two upper versions use a larger 77 kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) pack with more range and faster charging.

Range figures are WLTP estimates and haven't been fully certified yet. WLTP numbers usually come out higher than the EPA ratings US buyers see, so if the ID. Tiguan comes to the US, expect the 77 kWh RWD to land somewhere around 300 miles EPA rather than 373. (That's our estimate, not a VW figure.)

Charging: Faster, and It Can Power Your House

Every ID. Tiguan supports 11 kW AC charging at home and DC fast charging at up to 105 kW (58 kWh) or 165 kW (77 kWh). It also supports Plug & Charge, so charging starts automatically when you plug in, and bidirectional charging: Vehicle-to-Load (powering devices), Vehicle-to-Home (backing up your house during an outage), and Vehicle-to-Grid. That's a big upgrade for a mainstream compact SUV.

The Interior Fixes ID.4 Owners' Biggest Complaint

If you've owned or test-driven an ID.4, you probably remember the touch-sensitive sliders and haptic steering wheel buttons. VW listened. The ID. Tiguan brings back physical buttons: a hard-key panel for basic climate controls, a real rotary dial for audio volume, and a steering wheel with actual buttons.

Screens haven't gone away. There's a 10-inch digital driver display, a 15-inch center touchscreen, and a new 12-inch passenger display with a privacy mode, so the driver can't watch what the passenger is streaming. Other features include two Qi2 wireless phone chargers, available massaging and ventilated seats, and Harman Kardon audio. On the outside, VW's new "Pure Positive" design brings back classic pull-style door handles.

What About the US?

This is the big question for American shoppers. Volkswagen says the ID. Tiguan is planned to succeed the ID.4 in North America, but it hasn't announced when, where US models will be built, or what they'll cost. VW says those details will come after the European launch. The German starting price of €42,695 converts to about $48,000, but European prices include VAT, so a converted price is only a rough guide to what US buyers would pay.

What's still unknown for US buyers
  • US launch date
  • US pricing and trims
  • Where US-market models will be built
  • Official EPA range ratings
  • Whether the 58 kWh LFP base model will be offered in the US

VW ID. Tiguan FAQ

What is the VW ID. Tiguan's range?
Up to 600 km (about 373 miles) WLTP with the 77 kWh battery and rear-wheel drive. The 58 kWh version is rated up to 450 km (about 280 miles).

How much does the VW ID. Tiguan cost?
It starts at €42,695 in Germany. US pricing hasn't been announced.

How fast does the ID. Tiguan charge?
10–80% in about 26 minutes (58 kWh, 105 kW peak) or about 29 minutes (77 kWh, 165 kW peak).

When is the ID. Tiguan coming to the US?
Volkswagen hasn't given a date. It says North American timing will be announced after the European launch.

The bottom line: The ID. Tiguan fixes the things people complained about in the ID.4, including the frustrating touch controls and so-so range, and puts VW's best-known nameplate on it. In Europe, it looks like one of the strongest mainstream electric SUVs coming in 2027. For US buyers, it looks promising, but there's still no date or price. Until VW announces those, the ID.4 is what you can buy here.
