The tiny two-seat Smart is back. At the Paris Motor Show, Smart, now a 50/50 joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and Geely, revealed the all-electric Smart #2, the successor to the iconic Fortwo. It's still small enough to park nose-in at the curb, but it now has more than twice the battery, more than twice the range, and DC fast charging, which the last electric Fortwo never had. Prices start at €19,990 (about $22,400), and European deliveries begin in 2027.

The Fortwo Is Back

When Smart stopped building the EQ Fortwo in 2024, it seemed like the end of the original idea: a car so short you could park it sideways in a regular space. Under Geely's ownership, Smart moved toward bigger crossovers like the #1 and #3. The #2 goes back to where the brand started, a two-seater that's only about 5 cm longer than the last Fortwo.

According to Wolfgang Ufer, CEO of Smart Europe, the time is right for the next chapter of the two-seater. Cities across Europe are adding low-emission zones and tighter parking, and a small, cheap EV with real range fits them well.

Big Upgrades Over the Old Fortwo

The last EQ Fortwo had a 17.6 kWh battery, a WLTP range of 133 km, and no DC fast charging at all. The #2 fixes all three.

The #2 rides on Smart's new Electric Compact Architecture, with the battery in the floor and a five-link rear suspension, which Smart says is a first in its class. That should make it ride and handle more like a bigger car than the bouncy Fortwos of the past. Its 6.95-meter curb-to-curb turning circle means U-turns on narrow streets are still easy.

Things to know before you get excited
  • Specs are pending EU homologation and could still change
  • 290 km is a WLTP target; real-world range will be lower, especially in winter
  • Only two seats, so the €19,990 Renault Twingo E-Tech offers four seats and five doors at the same price, but with a smaller 27.5 kWh battery and 262 km of range
  • The #2 is built in China on Geely-developed hardware

A Brabus Version Is Coming

Smart has already teased a sportier Brabus #2 with a more aggressive look, due for a 2027 launch. Smart hasn't released power figures yet, but Brabus has been Smart's in-house performance badge for decades, and the Brabus versions of the #1 and #3 are the quickest cars in their lineups.

Can You Buy a Smart #2 in the US?

No. Daimler pulled Smart out of the US and Canada in 2019, and the #2 is built in China, where tariffs and restrictions on Chinese-built connected vehicles effectively block it from the US market. Americans who want a tiny two-seat EV will have to keep waiting. Still, the #2 shows what US buyers are missing: a full-featured city EV with adaptive cruise and fast charging for about €20,000, roughly $22,400.

Smart #2 FAQ

How much does the Smart #2 cost?
It starts at €19,990 (about $22,400) in Germany, France and Italy. The top Couture Edition is €25,690 (about $28,800). It isn't sold in the US.

What is the Smart #2's range?
Up to 290 km (about 180 miles) WLTP, a target figure pending homologation.

How fast does the Smart #2 charge?
10–80% in about 20 minutes at up to 65 kW DC.

Is the Smart #2 a replacement for the Fortwo?
Yes. It's Smart's new two-seat city car and the successor to the EQ Fortwo, which ended production in 2024.

Is the Smart #2 coming to the US?
No. Smart left the US in 2019, and the China-built #2 has no path to the US market under current rules.

The bottom line: The Smart #2 is the Fortwo that Fortwo fans wanted all along. It's still tiny and still easy to park, but now it has a usable battery, real fast charging, and modern driver-assistance tech, all for about €20,000 (roughly $22,400). In Europe's crowded cities, it could be the right car at the right time. Americans will just have to admire it from a distance.
