Rivian's Amazon Vans Get All-Wheel Drive and a 129 kWh Battery, With Up to 36% More Range

The EPA has certified Rivian's new EDV 700 Large vans with a 129 kWh battery and the first AWD option. Here's the range, specs and what it means for Amazon.

Rivian's Amazon Vans Get All-Wheel Drive and a 129 kWh Battery, With Up to 36% More Range

Rivian's electric delivery vans, the ones you see in Amazon Prime blue on almost every street in America, are getting their biggest upgrade since production started in 2021. The EPA has certified two new versions of Rivian's largest van: a long-range front-wheel-drive model and the first-ever all-wheel-drive model. Both get a much bigger 129 kWh battery, and both go much farther than today's vans.

  • EPA certificate issued September 17, 2026, for the 2027 model year
  • New models: EDV 700 Large FWD and EDV 700 Large AWD
  • 129 kWh usable LFP battery, up from 90 kWh
  • AWD adds a second motor, and each motor is rated at 265 kW
  • Also sold to other fleets as the Rivian Commercial Van, not just Amazon
  • Amazon has told its drivers to expect the new vans later this year

The Range Numbers, Explained

EPA filings show unadjusted lab results. These are raw test-cycle numbers, not the real-world ranges Rivian advertises, so here's how to read them.

VanBatteryEPA lab range (unadjusted)vs. today's van
EDV 700 (current)90 kWh261.7 miBaseline
EDV 700 Large FWD129 kWh355.5 mi+36%
EDV 700 Large AWD129 kWh322.25 mi+23%

Rivian currently advertises about 160 miles of range for its delivery vans, well below the 261.7-mile lab figure, because real deliveries mean heavy loads, constant stops and climate control running all day. If the new vans scale the same way, the Large FWD would land somewhere around 215 to 220 miles of advertised range, and the AWD around 195 to 200. That's our estimate, not a Rivian figure. Either way, it's a big gain for a van that may make 150+ stops a day.

What the extra range costs
  • Weight goes up: the Large FWD weighs 8,223 lb and the AWD 8,677 lb, compared with 7,295 lb for today's EDV 700
  • Gross vehicle weight rating rises to 10,000 lb, up from 9,500 lb
  • DC fast charging tops out at 100 kW, with 11.5 kW AC charging, which is fine for overnight depot charging but slow on the road
  • The big battery is only offered on the 700 body; the smaller EDV 500 keeps its existing battery and FWD

Why All-Wheel Drive Matters

Until now, every Rivian van has been front-wheel drive. That works in Phoenix, but it's a problem on icy streets in Minneapolis or muddy rural roads in Ohio. Adding a second motor gives Amazon and other fleets a van they can use in snow, ice and on unpaved routes, which opens up territory where electric delivery used to be a hard sell. Longer range also makes rural routes possible, since stops there can be miles apart.

Amazon asked for this. On Rivian's Q2 earnings call, CEO RJ Scaringe said the company was "developing new variants with a larger battery pack and all-wheel drive to support Amazon's needs." The EPA certification shows those variants are close to delivery.

Why This Matters for Rivian

Most people know Rivian for its R1 and R2 SUVs and trucks, but the vans are a big part of the business. Amazon accounted for 52% of Rivian's automotive revenue in Q1 2026, and Cox Automotive estimates Rivian sold about 4,003 vans in the US in Q2, up 48% from a year earlier. Since Rivian opened the Commercial Van to other businesses, fleet customers beyond Amazon can buy these same new versions, with no Prime paint and no Amazon badges. What About Faster Charging, Hybrids and Cheaper EVs?

Rivian's van upgrade fits a broader trend across the industry this fall. Automakers are putting bigger batteries and better range in practical work vehicles. In Europe and the UK, new low-cost models and new Chinese brands keep arriving. Faster charging is becoming a selling point, with BYD now claiming 10–97% in nine minutes on its new Atto 8. And extended-range EVs (EREVs) and plug-in hybrids are getting more attention as a stepping stone for buyers who aren't ready to go fully electric. For fleets that charge at their own depots every night, though, Rivian's bet is simple: give them more range and all-wheel drive, and a battery-electric van can handle routes it couldn't before.

Rivian Van FAQ

What is the range of the new Rivian EDV 700 Large?
The FWD version tested at 355.5 miles and the AWD at 322.25 miles on the EPA's unadjusted lab cycle. Real-world advertised range will be lower; today's vans are advertised at about 160 miles.

Does Rivian make an all-wheel-drive van?
Yes, the new 2027 EDV 700 Large AWD, with two motors rated at 265 kW each. It's Rivian's first AWD van.

How big is the battery in the new Rivian van?
129 kWh usable, up from 90 kWh. Both use LFP cells.

Can businesses other than Amazon buy these vans?
Yes. The same configurations are sold as the Rivian Commercial Van to other fleet customers.

When will the new Rivian vans be available?
Amazon has told its drivers to expect them later in 2026. Rivian hasn't announced a public delivery date for other fleets.

The bottom line: This is the most important upgrade Rivian's van has gotten in five years. With a 129 kWh battery, around a third more range and optional all-wheel drive, it can now handle snowy cities and long rural routes that the original van couldn't. Expect to see more of these vans in more places soon.
